What Happened to Nortel?

Nortel Nortel still exists as a company, but it has had to file for protection against creditors. As such, the company has become a shell of what it once was (at its peak Nortel employed roughly 100,000 people worldwide). Nortel’s demise can be contributed to a wide range of different and complex factors. The major reasons were due to a failure of Nortel to adapt to security threats such as accounting errors, fraud and breach of trust issues. Beyond this, the bursting of the internet bubble also made for trouble (Nortel expanded rapidly in the late 90’s and early 00’s during the rapid rise and expansion of the internet, but once that initial growth subsided Nortel had expanded much too quickly to support itself).
