What Is Cloud PBX?
PBX stands for Private Branch Exchange. A PBX phone system will automatically answer all your calls and route them to the correct user extension or department. Traditionally, a PBX system was located at your business location, however, cloud PBX is a virtual system that is located off-site and you access it through the cloud (internet).

Cloud Private Branch Exchange (PBX) is a virtual phone system that you access through the cloud
How Cloud Private Branch Exchange Works
One Outside Number:
Both cloud and on-premise PBX systems let your business have one external phone number or line for the outside world that all of the internal lines access. The PBX provides a way for all of your internal lines to connect.
Calls can be transferred and made within the organization without each telephone requiring its own individual outside line. Instead, each user will have their own 3 or 4 digit extension. Alternately, when someone from outside of your organization calls your business number, your PBX system will transfer that call to the appropriate internal line.
PBX is Like a Power Bar:
A PBX system acts as the bridge between the phone lines you have and the actual phones you have. It works similar to a power bar in your home. The power bar takes power from one source and allows you to plug in several different electronics.
A PBX runs on the same principle. You can plug numerous phones into a single line, so you can have more phones than phone lines. It also lets people within your organization make free calls to each other and several people can use the phone line at the same time. It also provides features like transferring, voice mail, call recording and more.

The Benefits of Cloud Private Branch Exchange
There are many great benefits to having a cloud Private Branch Exchange system, these include:
1. Lower Costs:
On-site PBX systems are very expensive to set up because you need to purchase your own server and hardware and you need to continually keep it maintained because you own the equipment. Cloud PBX on the other hand, is less expensive to set up because you don’t have to purchase your PBX hardware.
Your cloud PBX provider owns all of the equipment and they are also responsible for its maintenance. All you need to do is purchase the IP phones to connect to your system and your cloud PBX provider through your internet connection.
2. Connect Remotely:
Cloud PBX also allows you to connect your business phone numbers from remote locations by using a web phone or a mobile app. No matter where you are, when someone calls you through your business number, you can answer and the caller will think that you are at your business. This will help you improve your customer service and efficiency.

3. Lower Monthly Fees:
Using VoIP phones that connect to your cloud PBX through the internet means that you can avoid the expensive long-distance fees that traditional landlines have.
4. Easy to Scale:
It is much easier to add additional phones to your cloud PBX system as your business grows because you don’t need to install new phone lines. You simply need to plug in your extra phones to your existing system.
5. Available for Small Businesses & Start-ups:
In the past, a PBX system was not an option for smaller businesses or start-ups due to the high initial costs to purchase the necessary equipment, the space needed to house the equipment and the expertise required to keep it running. However, lower costs and the fact that you don’t need to house your equipment means that cloud PBX is available for almost any business that wants to have this type of service.
Even smaller businesses and start-ups can afford it
6. Most Up-to-Date Software:
Because cloud-hosted PBX is managed by your provider, you don’t need to worry about having to purchase the latest software and always having to keep it updated. That is the responsibility of your service provider.
7. Great Features:
Cloud PBX also offers you great features at minimal to no extra charge that will help your business run more efficiently and professionally. Some of the great features you can get with cloud PBX include:
- Automated call answering, giving the caller menu options they can use to reach the department or extension they require
- Automated customizable greetings
- Call forwarding to a mobile device
- Music can be played for callers on hold
- Voice messages that can be recorded for each extension
- Voice messages that can be sent to an email address
- ACD (Automatic Call Distribution) feature which allows the option to evenly distribute calls amongst employees
You won’t need to worry about having to purchase the latest software
Cloud PBX vs On-Site PBX
The only difference between a cloud PBX and an on-premise PBX is the location of the PBX server that directs and connects all of your phone lines. A cloud PBX has a server that is located on the Internet (the cloud) and an on-premise PBX is located at your facility.
